Obituary for Sara Hattaway Publication: Fort Myers News-Press Obituaries, 11-25-2003 Citation Details: Fort Myers News-Press Text: SARA HATTAWAY (SAPP) (FMHS 1933) 2003-11-25 After an extended illness, Ft. Myers, Florida pioneer, Sara Hattaway Sapp, died November 23, 2003 at the Hope Hospice House in Ft. Myers. Born in Milan, Georgia, on October 24, 1915, Sara was the daughter of Harvey Walker Hattaway and Eulalia Clark Hattaway Cannon and the stepdaughter of James A. Cannon, Sr. She moved with her grandparents, John M. and Mattilu Clark, her mother, sister, Lalai (EULALIA "LALIA" HATTAWAY (STOUT) FMHS 1935) and extended family to Ft. Myers in 1924. Sara was graduated from Ft. Myers High School in 1933, and Florida Southern College in 1936. She taught at Gwynne Institute elementary school from 1936 to 1941. Sara married James Austin Sapp on July 4, 1937. She helped James and son, Jim in the family business Tice Foodway, Tice, Florida, until illness forced her to retire in 1994. James preceded her in death on September 1, 1995. She is survived by four children, Lali Hamric (Curtis), Lee O'Hare, (Russell), Lyn Atherton, (Brooks) and James Medford Sapp (Roxanne). In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren, Cynthia Fetterhoff (Charles) Chris Aloia, (Iris), Gary DeVore, (Kelli) Kim Dean (Brian) and Ginny Sapp; several step grandchildren, several great and step great grandchildren, her devoted, loving sister and best friend, Lalai Stout, Aunt Margaret Clark Bartleson, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Since 1997, Sara resided at HealthPark Care Center, where she was loved and watched over by her extended family there, among those she leaves there, who were primary to her needs are Carol Nicotra, LPN Supervisor, Mary (Esther) Battle, FiFi Berluis and her roommate, Gloria McCarty. During her lifetime, Sara was an active member of the community. She belonged to the First Baptist Church in Ft. Myers where she was a past president of the Women's Missionary Union, taught Sunday and Bible School, the Girl's Auxiliary, and directed the Cradle Roll and Nursery Department for many years. She was on the Flower Committee of the church, which created all the floral arrangements for the various church services and events. She was a charter member and past officer of the Ft. Myers Collector's Club, Edison Garden Club, Ft. Myers Community Club, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She taught Junior Garden Club for many years as well as serving as a substitute teacher for the Lee County School System. Sara and James were members of the Royal Palm Yacht and the Cypress Lake Country Clubs. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the First Baptist Church, 1735 Jackson Street, Ft. Myers, FL. 33901, the Southwest Florida Community Foundation, P.O.
