Roger S. 'Spike' Wilkins, 77, of Camarillo and Desert Hot Springs, passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2005, in Santa Monica, Calif.

Spike was born in Fishkill, N.Y., on June 3, 1927, and was a 42-year Ventura County resident, coming from New York state. He was a retired agent from Prudential Insurance Co. He was a Mason of Farmerville Union Lodge No. 183, a member of American Legion Post 741, Saticoy Senior Men's Golf Club and Trinity Presbyterian Church. His greatest joy was golfing, fishing, hunting and traveling. His love of travel kept him connected with family and old friends, and he was continually making new friends. Spike was an unassuming, unselfish man who was always giving and doing for others.

Spike is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Iris Wilkins of Camarillo; son, Craig Wilkins of Ithaca, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-law Lynne and Steve Giles of Camarillo; daughter Deborah Fisher of Atlanta, Ga.; sisters Winifred Harford-Kirk of Canadaigua, N.Y., Dorothy Cornelius of Glendale, Ariz., Alice Buck of Prescott, Ariz., and Betty MacCheyne of Interlaken, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister Louise Williammee; and brother, James Wilkins Jr.

Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2304 Antonio Drive, Camarillo, with Pastor Jerry Cooper officiating. Private inurnment at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Ventura County Community Foundation, Iris and Roger 'Spike' Wilkins Scholarship Fund, 1317 Del Norte Road, Suite 150, Camarillo, CA 93010. Arrangements are under the direction of Conejo Mountain Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 2052 Howard Road, Camarillo, 1-805-482-1959.

As the story goes, when Roger was young he was teased because he was so thin. One person said he was thin as a rail spike and he gained the nickname Spike that stuck with him the rest of his life.
