Notes

Note
The relationship between William Hattaway and Baton Hattaway is not shown in any documents but is a conclusion that is drawn from a couple different factors. What is an established fact is that he was the father of Elisha, Abel, and Irwin Hattaway. Irwin lived in Warren county a couple doors down from Baton as shown from the 1830 federal census. Irwin named a son after Baton ‎(James Baton)‎ and James had two children that also received the name Baton. Baton has shown in every census that his birth place was in Pitt County, North Carolina ‎(same place as Irwin)‎ about 1793 which would fit with the birth dates of Irwin, Elisha, and Abel.
Military Capt. Pfifer's unit was a task that was often given to young boys as old as 10. This information would fit with the age of William who would have been 15 at the time. William only served three months with the unit but there were often reserve units that only served short periods of time.
