They grew corn ?‎(covered in tar)‎?, squash, sweet potato, hay, and peas. The farm was also close to a lake where they would go fishing. Source: 1930 Federal Census Liberty Co GA
Publication: ftp://ftp.us-census.org/pub/usgenweb/census/ga/liberty/1930/ed05-pg210a.txt

Note: The interesting point about the 1930 census was the amount of detail that was listed in it about Tilman. First off, we find that he's listed as 51 which would mean that he was born in 1878 but other records show him as being born in 1873. We also find that he was a farmer with 3 children ‎(Robert, Lois, and Earl)‎ on their own farm. Another contradicting point is that as the story goes, he was part of the marines that were sent to the Boxer rebellion ‎(China)‎ in 1900 but is not listed as a veteran in this census. Another interesting point of it is that he does not claim to have gone to school but can read and write. We also get a detailed location of where the farm is located ‎(Glennville road, Taylor's Creek)‎.
