Archive: Dreading the inevitable
|
I'll be honest, I haven't been updating the site since I made the post back on the 6th. I've been dreading the thought of doing something it. It took so much to update it that I haven't had the heart to go back and finish what I started. That doesn't mean I won't get back to it. It just means that it's taking me a little longer than anticipated. I enjoy keeping this up so that people can have a place to look at their heritage but it does get to be alot of work sometimes. I'm not complaining but stating that....Ok, I am complaining. I just wanted to let everyone know that I will get it done but it's just taking longer than I expected.
I still need to update the forums so that they can be used again and I've run into a minor issue with the theme since it wasn't setup for the software update. Keep looking as I will be updating more soon.

Archive: Upgrade from hell
|
I finally got around to doing what I've been putting off for the last couple months. I've been so swamped with requests and comments from people finding the website (mostly good) that I haven't had time to make any updates to it. The open source software Dragonfly CMS is the software that I use to manage this whole network of connected tubes. Occasionally, they will release updates and security fixes. They had a major release and I tried to install it previously but without success. So I finally sat down this weekend to get it done. I went through and finally had to kill my database. This meant that I had to do a fresh install and restore all my previous data directly into the database itself. Let me tell you, it was not fun. If you have it on your list of things to do in your lifetime before you die, mark it off with whiteout. I would rather wrap my lips around a hot iron before I had to do this again.
Pucker up buttercup!
Anyways, if you see anything that looks unusual or you run into an error, let me know and I'll do my best to get it fixed. Other than that, it looks like everything is going pretty good so far. I should have it back to 100% in the next day or two.

Archive: Where to go from here
|
This little experiment I like to call a website has been carried out for a year and a half now. I'm not saying that it's a failure or a success since it's had its ups and downs which has brought me to the conclusion that it's worth carrying on but the question now remains of where to go from here. While I've enjoyed sharing so much with photos and stories, I've been contemplating my own life and what really is worth doing.
Right now, I'm feeling like a one man leper colony and as such, I don't know whether this is worth doing to me. I've seen the genealogy portion blossom but I also enjoy writing about the different stories that I find (non-genealogy related) online. Political commentary has also been a passion of mine (as with much of my family). This website was actually started as a way for us, the Hattaway's, to remain in contact and to some extent, it has been successful. I've met many of my 3rd and 4th cousins that I never knew existed (via email and real life) and been able to trace family lines that I didn't even know were related.
Anywho, I've posted a poll to hear from you the reader (if there's any left) on what you would like to see. If I don't hear anything, then I'll know its time to shut it down. Thanks for all the fish.

Yeah, it's the new year and we're in for surprises right?? One of the first unwelcome surprises to start off my year was having someone try to hack this site. It seems that there was a security hole in the genealogy software that I use (phpgedview). I was able to stop the hack before it became serious with the help of the hosting service (thank you 1and1) but I can't believe that people would stoop to hack a genealogy website.
I'm actually pretty pissed about it. It's not like this is a "hate-site" where I post things about the KKK rallies or claim to be the anti-christ. It's a simple site that I put together that involved the last 3 months of my life to finding personal genealogy information and someone wants to turn it into their private playground.
That in my opinion is just wrong. Anyway, I'll help spread the word and let everyone know that if you use phpgedview, you better upgrade to the new 3.3.8 or 4.0 beta3 to stop the new hack out there. Happy hunting!

Archive: Let the blogs begin!
|
I just added a new feature to the website. Each registered person can now create their own blog on hattawaybros. There's nothing to it. You just have to click on the 'blogs' link on the left (hint: it's under community). Let me know if you like it or if it sucks. It's an experiment to see how well it goes.

Archive: Welcome to the NEW Hattawaybros!
|
Hattawaybros.com has undergone a transformation to a new CMS (Content Management System). The change was brought about by some troubles we were having with the previous system (php-nuke). I still recommend phpnuke but I hope you have better luck than I did with it. We've changed over to the Dragonfly CMS which gives us all the features that we were looking for like coppermine photo gallery.
Anyway, I'll be working on the site to get it more inline with what we had before. I have to apologize to all the bros since all the previous content was lost in the change. I was able to salvage the pictures but that was about it. I'll be adding all the stuff we had previously and a few new features over the next couple days. Check back for more updates.
In the meantime, if you have any questions or just want to comment on the changes (like it or not), you can post in the forums or vote in the survey. Otherwise, we hope you enjoy the site and come back soon.
